About the Artist

Sharon Melton

Biography

I was born in Hopewell Virginia and spent most of my childhood into my teenage life, in South Miami Florida. From beaches to swamps, being young and having fun in the sun. I returned to Virginia with my family when I was nearing adulthood. I started my passion for art using pencils. However, it wasn't until much later in life that I had the opportunity to engage in any artistic endeavor. I had a full-time career as an RN and was a mom to my wonderful daughter. I addition to a full life I took care of my beloved mother.

My passion and desire to become an artist grew and I started taking a class here and there to learn how to get started; I wanted to paint. Time was still an issue as my daily life remaind full. My dreams waited a long time to come to fruition. When online classes became available my aspirations started to become a reality. Artists variety of videos gave me the tools I needed to progress became possible.

As time progressed so did my art and I started my own gallery with a close friend. However she has recently passed which left me with a blurry vision of the future. She was an intricate part with me becoming the person I am today. I moved forward and continue to take lessons and learn from other artists. I want to continue to improve and evolve. I am not sure I could ever become all I want to be as an artist. I hope there is enough time to at least come close.

I enjoy art of many mediums although I prefer oils. I am now stepping into learning portraiture. I will let you know how that goes.

Artist Statement

In my evolution of creating art, painting remains my primary focus. It is my favorite medium and means to express myself, to shout out with my voice or quietly speak my inner thoughts with a simple stroke, even those that hide from my awareness.

My preferred medium is oil on linen, although I do dabble in many mediums, but my main focus is on oil painting. My style is best described as realism and my representation of realism. My subject matter varies from landscapes to wildlife with many things in between, I would say my art tends to mark a moment in time, or an emotion that was felt at that time in space. It may also be the result and representation of what I was feeling at the time I was painting it. I strive to be able to project an emotion; to stir an emotion in the viewer, by use of color, places I've been, wished I had been, things and people that have affected me, molded me to be the person I am today.

I am very passionate about art and appreciate other artists of all mediums. It has been the best therapy in my life.
